How I Made My Business More Profitable with the “Profit First Lite” Method

If you’ve ever looked at your business bank account and thought, “Where did all the money go?” — you’re not alone.

A few months ago, I decided to implement a beginner-friendly version of the Profit First method, and it completely shifted the way I manage cash in my business.

As a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and founder of DBR Bookkeeping, I’ve always tracked my numbers, but there’s something different about giving your money purpose before you spend it. That’s what Profit First is all about.

What Is Profit First Lite?

Mike Michalowicz’s Profit First system recommends breaking your income into multiple categories: profit, owner’s pay, taxes, and operating expenses. But diving in full-force can be overwhelming. That’s why I recommend starting with what I call the “Lite” version:

  • Open 3–4 separate bank accounts

  • Allocate money for taxes, profit, and owner’s pay on a consistent schedule

  • Keep your operating expense account lean to reduce unnecessary spending

My Experience

I took the plunge last quarter. I created new accounts, synced them with QuickBooks Online, and built a routine to move money twice a month. The results were eye-opening:

✅ I paid myself consistently
✅ I set aside money for taxes without stress
✅ I still made a small profit
✅ And I reduced impulse spending just by separating the funds

I ended the quarter more confident and less anxious about finances. And best of all, my business continues to grow—with more intention.
