Building a Business as a Single Entrepreneur: Life, Business, and Discovering Purpose

If you would have asked me 30 years ago where I’d be today, I probably would’ve said something like married, teaching music at a university, or maybe still in the Army. But single, living in Northwest Arkansas, and running a bookkeeping business? I would’ve laughed—and probably asked, “What’s bookkeeping?”

Yet, here I am. And I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

Being a single entrepreneur isn’t always easy. There are definitely moments when you feel the weight of it all on your own shoulders. There’s no partner at home to talk shop with over dinner or remind you to step away from the laptop. But you know what? There are some real advantages, too.

Being single has given me the space to build this business with full focus and flexibility. I’ve been able to take risks, make fast decisions, and evolve DBR Bookkeeping into something I’m proud of—on my own terms. There’s a certain kind of clarity and independence that comes with this season of life, and I’m learning to embrace it fully.

I’m incredibly grateful for this journey—every twist, every restart, every late night spent dreaming, planning, or trying to figure it all out. And I’m especially thankful for the amazing people I’ve met along the way. From networking groups to my online communities, to clients who have become friends—you have helped shape this path.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned?

It’s okay to change paths. It’s okay to step away from what you thought life was supposed to look like and create something brand new. Something that fits you now.

So if you’re feeling stuck or uncertain, know this—your next chapter might look nothing like your last one… and that’s the beauty of it.
